EVRAZ NTMK Designs New Rail Wheel EV002 for Freight Railcars

EVRAZ Nizhniy Tagil Integrated Metallurgical Plant (EVRAZ NTMK), a Metal-Expo regular exhibitor, developed a new design for the rail wheel EV002 used in freight railcars.

The wheel with improved central load is meant for railcars used in Russia and the CIS member states. EV002 is special in that it has enhanced operational parameters, weighs less than its regular counterparts, and can work with central load of up to 30,000 kg. All of this increases the wheel’s lifespan and allows it to handle more cargo.

The new, improved parameters stem from a completely new shape of the wheel disk that reduces both inner strain and fatigue cracking. The shape was designed with the help of math modeling, EVRAZ Holding Ural’s Corporate Communications Center’s PR Department reports.

‘Major railcar manufacturers are now switching to railcars with central load of up to 27,000 kg and are showing an interest in wheels with low-strain disks. These wheels have a longer lifespan and make it possible to handle more cargo,’ says Managing Director at EVRAZ Nizhniy Tagil Integrated Metallurgical Plant and EVRAZ Kachkanarsky Ore Mining & Processing Enterprise Alexei Kushnarev.
