TMK Named Most Socially Efficient and Eco-friendly Company

TMK (Pipe Metallurgical Company),  a Metal-Expo regular exhibitor has topped the AK&M Analytical Information Agency’s annual social efficiency ranking among Russian metals and mining companies. The ranking is compiled to assess the social efficiency of major Russian companies, identify which companies make the biggest contribution to society while having the lowest impact on the environment and recognize companies that strike the right balance between their environmental footprint and positive social impact. This is the third year the ranking has been compiled, with TMK invariably topping the list in the Metals and Mining category.
As a responsible and eco-friendly business, TMK pursues a corporate policy aimed at creating an environment maximizing comfortable living not only for its employees but also for local communities across TMK’s areas of business. In the first half of 2020, the company spent a total of about RUB 630 million on various social and environmental programs.
In particular, during the COVID-19 pandemic, TMK has not only maintained full salaries for all employees but also channeled more than RUB 200 million toward additional payments for its staff and the implementation of priority preventive measures, and provided significant support to social and healthcare institutions in the regions in which it operates.
TMK has also supported the Sinara Charity Foundation’s Stop COVID-19! project by allocating around RUB 100 million to purchase modern medical devices, personal protective equipment (PPE) and antiseptics for hospitals in the Russian cities and towns hosting the company’s plants. Stop COVID-19! is supported, among others, by Sinara Group, one of Russia’s largest diversified holding companies. Through the program, the Sinara Charity Foundation has donated a total of 1.5 million medical masks, more than 250 thousand pairs of gloves, 35 thousand protective gowns, over 2,400 liters of antiseptic, tens of thousands of caps, respirators and face shields, as well as 230 beds and mattresses, and an entire isolation ward for COVID-19 patients to healthcare institutions nationwide.
In addition, TMK initiated the creation of a special bank account within the Sverdlovsk Regional Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (SOSPP) headed by Dmitry Pumpyanskiy, Chairman of TMK’s Board of Directors, to fund the current COVID-19 response. This includes the purchase of high-speed tests kits, medical equipment, medicine, and PPE for regional healthcare institutions and Rospotrebnadzor offices. TMK’s contribution exceeded RUB 28 million out of a total RUB 104 million donated to the charitable account by enterprises located in the Sverdlovsk Region.

TMK invests significant efforts and money into its comprehensive environmental program as part of the company’s commitment to environmental safety. Over 50 environmental activities totaling around RUB 300 million have already been completed during the first half of 2020.
In addition to the technical measures aimed at air, water and land protection and the sustainable use of natural resources, TMK’s environmental agenda covers area improvement, soil reclamation, tree planting, cleaning of banks, as well as initiatives to develop environmental literacy among company employees.

TMK takes consistent steps to improve the environmental situation across its areas of operation through tree planting. TMK’s Taganrog Metallurgical Works (TAGMET) has planted more than 450 coniferous and broadleaf trees and other plants in 1H 2020. TMK’s Volzhsky Pipe Plant is a participant of the regional initiative to plant greenbelts around local communities.

At the end of 2019, TMK reviewed its environmental policy to incorporate global best environmental practices and initiatives. The new environmental policy allows the company to monitor and manage its environmental risks more effectively. In particular, the company minimizes its production waste while increasing the share of recycled waste and using natural resources and energy in a more sustainable and economical way. TMK is fully open to dialogue on its environmental impact and is willing to discuss it with all stakeholders.

“Creating a healthy, comfortable and environmentally safe living environment is one of the three pillars of the ecosystem built by TMK in the areas where it operates. The other two pillars include a high-tech production environment and an education and research environment, with all three pillars closely interlinked. Our commitment to innovation and production capacity improvement (including environmental performance) drives TMK’s competitive edge and product quality, delivering robust financial performance. This in turn allows us to focus strongly on priority areas such as promoting scientific research, building a future talent pipeline and providing comfortable working and living conditions for employees and residents in the company’s regions of operation,” said Igor Korytko, CEO, TMK.
